The Cinque Terre

Five towns, Manarola (pictured), Vernazza, Corniglia, Riomaggiore, and Monterosso comprise the Cinque Terre. They are not accessible by car, and you can visit them on foot, by train, or by boat. All built on magnificent cliffs on the Ligurian coast in Italy, they are famous for their colorful houses and breathtaking cliffside scenery. All five towns were declared a World Heritage sight in 1997.
