The Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker

The Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker is a very important bird. It has the ability to draw phloem sap from trees. Many bats, squirrels, porcupines, and other small animals appreciate the birds for tapping the trees for sap that they rely on. The most important ally to the Sapsucker are hummingbirds. In winter and in the northern edges of their breeding zone, it can be difficult for the hummingbirds to find nectar. It just so happens that the tree sap is a perfect substitute for the nectar that allows them to survive.
