Space Elevator

Tokyo based Obayashi Corporation is serious about building a space elevator by 2050. The device would carry passengers skyward at 124 miles per hour delivering them to a station 22,000 miles above the earth in a little more than a week. A cable would be stretched from the spaceport to earth, about one-quarter of the distance between our planet and the moon. Riding on the cable made of ultra-strong carbon nanotubes, a 30 passenger car would travel by means of magnetic linear motors.
