Ocean Atlas

Sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor who is known for his underwater life size people sculpture installations, has submerged this new piece off the western coastline of New Providence in Nassau, Bahamas. 18 feet tall and weighing more than 60 tons, the cement sculpture depicts a local Bahamian girl carrying the weight of the ocean above her in reference to the Ancient Greek myth of Atlas, the titan who held up celestial spheres. The sculpture is constructed of a pH-neutral material that encourages the growth of coral and other marine life.
