Underground Opals
Pictured above are the chimneys of Coober Pedy, Australia, a town of about 3,000 people. Because of the harsh summer weather, everyone lives underground. Everything is underground including their homes, graveyards, bars, swimming pools, churches and opal mines. The opal mining capital of the world, Coober Pedy is a labyrinth of caves and tunnels. It sounds scary, but in fact the interiors are really beautiful with mostly rose colored sandstone walls and every amenity you can think of.
