In Pingxi, Taiwan, traditional lanterns are released for the Sky Lantern Festival every year. The airborne lanterns are made from oiled rice paper on a bamboo frame. Inside is a small candle or fuel cell composed of a waxy flammable material. When lit, the flame heats the air inside the lantern causing it to rise in the air. The sky lanterns are airborne only as long as the flame stays lit, and then the lantern floats softly to the ground.
