Siberia's Altai Mountains

The Altai region of southern Siberia is a spectacular ecologically diverse area that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Altai is the Mongolian word for "gold", as the region's trees and grasses are aptly named in this photo taken at dawn in Autumn. Two of Siberia's major rivers, the Ob and the Irtysh, come together in this rugged mountainous terrain.
