First erected in 1923, the Hollywoodland sign was to promote a housing development in the Hollywood Hills. During the Golden Age of Tinseltown, it soon became a symbol of the movie industry. After the housing was built, they left the Hollywood letters only.
At 44 feet tall, the sign can be seen from miles away.
