Painted Hills

Part of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon are the Painted Hills. Shifting afternoon light reflects off the blacks, reds, golds and yellows that make up the hills' layers. The area takes up 3,132 acres of the National Monument, and the layers correspond to different geological eras from many years ago when the area was a huge floodplain.
