The Chauvet Cave Paintings
Found in 1994 by Jean-Marie Chauvet, the Chauvet Cave has the earliest cave paintings known anywhere on earth. Located in the Ardeche Valley of southeast France, the cave contains over 400 painted or engraved animals that date back 32,000-35,000 years ago. This rare sanctuary of Palaeolithic art has never been open to the public, but in 2014, a near exact replica of the cave will open for tourists about 2 miles away from the original find.
