Singing Dunes

Mingsha Shan, meaning "echoing sand mountain" in English, is a dune field known for the phenomenon of singing sands. Located in China's Taklamakan Desert, the dunes are a huge 5,660 feet above sea level. When the top layer of sand is whipped off by the desert winds, the dunes whistle, sing, and even boom. They have been known to create deep rumbling sounds reaching a very loud 105 decibels.
