The Gates of Hell
The "Gates of Hell" is also known as the Darvaza Gas Crater. In 1971, a Soviet drilling rig punched into a massive underground natural gas cavern in the Karakum Desert in Turkmenistan. Poisonous fumes began leaking out from the hole at an alarming rate. To head off a potential environmental catastrophe, they lit the hole on fire. The 328 foot wide hole has been burning ever since.
