Underpass
Built in 1931, this Art Deco railroad underpass in Birmingham, Alabama, is a key passageway between the downtown and a newly refurbished urban area called Railroad Park. For years this unlit, dark underpass was very dangerous, so the city hired sculptor and public artist Bill FitzGibbons to create a lighting solution that would encourage foot traffic. Called "Light Rail", it is composed of thousands of LEDs that are computerized to form different colors and patterns.
